St Peter's site Intensive care unit processes approximately 400 admissions per year. It is an 8 bedded unit and runs a critical care outreach service. Whilst trainees are on the ICM unit they participate only in the ICM on call rota. It is recognized for intermediate level training in intensive care medicine. All weekday sessions are covered by 2 consultants (One who whom is an intensivist). The lead trainers for education of trainees in ICM is Dr Ian White and Dr Melinda Brazier. The lead trainer for education of Foundation trainees in ICM is Dr Melinda Brazier. There are 8 intensive care consultants on the out of hour's rota. The out of hours on call (Bleep 5066) is staffed by a mixture of junior doctors (most with advanced emergency airway management skills). Formal teaching in the ICM comes in part as presentations in the Wednesday /Tuesday morning teaching sessions 0800 - 0830 hrs. Daily weekday ward rounds occur with the critical care outreach team on which trainees are encouraged to attend, work load permitting. The ICM unit has the capacity for Renal replacement therapy, delivery of Heliox (O2/H2) and runs a transfer training course "Tricky trips". It is involved in the teaching Intensive Care Medicine as part of the regional study days for CT1-2's trainees.
