Management Module (Post FRCA ST5-7 trainees)

As part of the training modules available once the ST3 year modules are completed then some suggested activities could include:
  • attending a pre-assessment meeting (discuss with lead for pre-assessment)
  • attending a trust board meeting (discuss with clinical director)
  • attending a clinical governance meeting (discuss with lead for governance)
  • attending a trust clinical audit meeting (discuss with lead for anaesthetic audit)
  • discuss this module with current clinical director for anaesthetic services
  • shadowing the chief executive for half a day (contact College Tutor to arrange)
  • attending executive board meeting (discuss with clinical director)
  • shadowing the head of KSS school of anaesthesia
  • shadow clinical director in anaesthetics and intensive care medicine
  • attend junior anaesthetic and ITU appointment interviews (trust and deanery level)
  • become the representative at the trusts Local Faculty Group meetings
  • become pro-active and organise the Christmas rota

Courses provided free of charge by the trust Clinical Effectiveness Support Unit include:
  • On-line equal opportunities & diversity training session (print certificate once completed)
  • Clinical Audit training
  • Communication training
  • Introduction to project management
  • Questionnaire design
Attending an external management course would be of value.


Vascular Module

There are 2 all day vascular lists available each week for experience in Vascular anaesthesia.

Anaesthetic experience can be gained in:
  • Aortic aneurysm repair occurs in the open and closed (Endovascular Repair - EVAR) manners.
  • local and general anaesthesia for Carotid surgery
  • EVAR Thoracic aneurysm with lumber CSF drain insertion is practiced in the angiography suite.
  • Axilliary to femoral & Fem-fem crossover shunts
  • Femoral popliteal bypass surgery
  • venous surgery
  • Limb Amputations
  • Emergency in hospital cover for vascular injury

General surgery
  • Major lower bowel surgery (anterior resections, abdominoperineal)
  • Gall bladder surgery (not including hepatobiliary)
  • Paediatric hernia surgery
  • Laparoscopic gastric bandings
  • Endocrine surgery - Thyroid, para-thyroid, neo-endocrine
  • Breast

Ear Nose & Throat
  • Day surgery operations (no laryngectomies or major head and neck)
  • Abundance of paediatric case load (tonsils, grommets, adenoids)
  • Sinus surgery

Eye surgery
  • limited to adult cataract day surgery cases
  • Paediatric squint & ductal surgery

Gynaecology
  • there is a full range of major and minor surgeries including major cases involving bowel surgery for endometriosis and malignancies.
  • Endometrial ablation

Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Application of ilizarov frames (cyclical external fixators)
  • Upper limb surgery (interscalene blocks performed)
  • Major joint replacement
  • Long and short bone fractures
  • Thoracic epidurals for fractured ribs

Dental & Minor Maxillofacial
  • Day case adult and paediatric population

Urological surgery
  • Regional centre for bladder cystectomies
  • Radical prostatectomy
  • Paediatric circumcision
  • Nephrectomy
  • Kidney stone surgery

Ashford & St Peter's does not offer Thoracic, Cardiac or neurosurgery.
