The August intake has 3 novice brand new starters. Recruitment comes from the Foundation grade but may come from other specialities. Appointment process is via the Kent, Surrey & Sussex (KSS) Deanery, which is currently a once a year process. A training portfolio is sent from the KSS deanery with information about the general training requirements including the workplace assessments. No on call commitments occur for 12 weeks once started. During this period all lists are fully supervised either in theatre direct supervision and then if progress is made a short distance with immediate assistance available when called for. During the initial 3 months it is expected that "The Test of initial Competency in anaesthesia" will be completed. Page 24-35 The test of initial Competency in anaesthesia located in CCT in Anaesthetics II: Competency Based Basic Level (ST Years 1 and 2) Training and Assessment. A manual for trainees and trainers (August 2008) During the 3 months, if the test of initial competency in anaesthesia is not obtained successfully the trainee will not progress to solo anaesthesia with remote supervision and will not join the on call rota. During the first 6 weeks attendance at a weekly Friday "new starters" all day course will occur. Currently there is a £25-50 training fee to cover some operational costs (Lecturers do not receive any fee for their free time). This cost can be claimed out of their current annual study leave budget ~ £650-£800/ year (apply and enquire to anaesthetic department manager for the process). It is anticipated limited annual or study leave will be taken during this initial 3 month period. A priority towards the rapid turnover and emergency lists will initiated within reason. CT1's take precedent over Foundation year 1 trainees and paramedic personnel. An induction interview and initial appraisal is encouraged to take part within the first two weeks of commencement of training. Any issues or training queries should be taken up with your respective educational supervisor or the College Tutor in anaesthetics. The post graduate Centre may be able to help with some other training issues. You will need to register as a new trainee in anaesthetics with the Royal College of Anaesthetists. A registration form can be obtained by clicking here . You will need two signatures, one from the College Tutor in anaesthetics at Ashford and St Peter's and one from the regional advisor. The College tutor in anaesthetics will be able to advise you on the person and their address to send the signed form with forwarding envelope to the Royal College of Anaesthesia: Training Administrator THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ANAESTHETISTS Churchill House 35 Red Lion Square London WC1R 4SG Tel: 020 7092 1552 email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it During the first year of rotation you remain at one hospital trust and gain a broad experience on all the available training lists. An initial emphasis on the emergency surgery lists will occur and then a gradual cessation of these emergency lists will come in order to spread the opportunity to others (e.g. F1's). It is anticipated that opportunities to intubate and gain experience will be sort from not just your allocated theatre but also from the other theatres who do not have very junior personnel to increase the numbers of attempts at advanced airway skills. New starters will be on both the Ashford and St Peter's site. There is no barrier to taking the primary FRCA in the first year but candidates must be prepared. Information can be obtained from here. A logbook must be kept from Day 1 and will form part of the annual review of competency progression (ARCP) assessment. An electronic logbook can be downloaded from the Royal College of Anaesthetists. A paper and memory stick back-up is advised. The logbook will be required for application to the ST3 training grade. A combined paper & electronic training portfolio is advised and can be downloaded here. Towards the completion of the 3 month induction training for new starters, it is required that you shadow a senior trainee until 10pm or a weekend day. A later start in the working day will occur when you choose the day of the shadow. Trial periods of carrying the bleep during weekday at first accompanied and then Solo will occur towards the end of your "New starter" induction 3 month period. Allocation of trainees to lists is performed by the department secretary & College Tutor. The department secretary also does the weekly rota. You need to contact either if you have a working preference. Self directed learning is encouraged. External courses for the primary FRCA is at a first come basis. There is a day release course or a two week course available in London. |
