What is Diversity About?

It’s about ensuring that staff, whatever their differences, feel valued and have a fair and equitable quality of working life, where we accept differences between individuals and value benefits diversity brings to staff, the Trust and patients.

“There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ citizen. People’s needs and concerns differ: between women and men for example, between the young and the old; and between those of different social, cultural and educational backgrounds and people with disabilities. Some of these concerns have not been given sufficient recognition in the past. We must understand the needs of all people and respond to them. This, too, is a crucial part of modernising government”.

Trust Core Values

Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Trust consulted staff throughout the organisation to identify a shared set of core values.

These are:

·          Putting patients at the heart of what we do and how we do it

·          Being open and honest

·          Promoting team work

·          Valuing, supporting and retaining staff

·          Recognising both individual and team contributions

·          Supporting staff development

·          Communicating effectively

Equality and Diversity Steering Group

This group will oversee all issues in relation to diversity and equality in the Trust.

Dignity at Work

Bullying and harassment will not be tolerated in this Trust. There are informal and formal procedures that will apply if staff feel that they are being bullied or harassed. The Dignity at Work policy is currently being updated. Advice is also available from the Human Resources department.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

Staff who would like to speak to someone confidentially for advice and information or emotional support can contact (EAP) on freephone 0800 282193, 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. Freephone numbers do not appear on phone bills.

Recruitment

“The Trust promotes equality and diversity and welcome applications regardless of race, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation or religious belief.”

Staff Survey

Each year the Trust surveys its staff about what it is like to work in the organisation. Part of the survey will include questions about fairness and dignity at work. As a member of this Trust, please take the opportunity to have your say.
