Details of the Response

Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding MRSA and C.Difficile. Please see below the response from our Infection Control Consultant.

MRSA Cases

There were 31 cases in 2006-7. 22 of these were acquired in the Trust, and 9 in the community - one from a local community hospital and the rest from home.

There were 15 cases in 2007-8. 8 of these were acquired in the Trust. Of the 7 others, one acquired it in a Spanish hospital, 3 were admitted with it from home and the other 3 were thought to be contaminated blood cultures taken on admission.

C.Difficile

The HPA does not hold figures on the numbers of C.difficile cases in over 2 year olds. These figures were only collected from April 2007. The figures on the system before that were for over 65s and are for calendar years only as can be seen if you follow the link. The division of hospital and community cases on the HPA database started in April 2008.

In 2006-7 we had 422 cases in over 65s. 311 were hospital acquired and 111 community acquired.

In 2007-8 we had 535 cases in over 2s. 269 were hospital acquired and 269 were community acquired.

C.Difficile acquired in Community Hospitals in 2006-7 was 44 and in 2007-8 was 59.

We are unable to furnish figures for care homes because samples may be sent by GPs but the accompanying form doesn’t state whether or not the patient is in a care home.
