How many patients or members of the public made a complaint relating to the maternity unit in the 08/09 financial year?
How many of these complaints made reference to:
- (i) equipment shortage or failure,
- (ii) a lack of adequate staff and
- (iii) staff attitude or performance.

Details of the Response
Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding complaints relating to the Trust’s Maternity Unit.
The Trust’s Complaints Manager has responded.
- If you have a maternity unit within your trust how many patients or members of the public made a complaint relating to the maternity unit in the 08/09 financial year?
In the 08 / 09 financial year the Trust had 3965 maternity patients. During this same time period the Trust received only 24 formal complaints relating to the maternity unit.
- How many of these complaints made reference to (i) equipment shortage or failure, (ii) a lack of adequate staff and (iii) staff attitude or performance?
- equipment = 0
- lack/shortage of staff = 0
- staff attitude = 5
Summary of the complaints:
- manner of nursery nurse and concern that she was unable to recognise baby was suffering with Mongolian Blue Spots.
- care from midwife, lack of careful note-taking, poor standard of English and lack of reassurance skills.
- an inappropriate remark made by a member of maternity staff at Maternity reception.
- lack of reassurance and support given to mother following home birth.
- lack of support and reassurance to young mother when experiencing difficulties and concerns around breast feeding.
