How many requests did you receive for weight loss surgery in each of the last three financial years 2007/8, 2008/9 and from April 2009 to date? How many of these requests were approved in each of these years?

What was the cost of the approved requests for weight loss surgery during each of these years? What were the reasons you gave for refusing weight loss surgery during each of these years please list?

What were the reasons you gave for approving weight loss surgery during each of these years please list?

Please provide a breakdown of the ages of those who requested weight loss surgery – eg 10-20yrs; 20-30yrs; 30-40yrs; 40-50yrs in each of these years?

Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding Weight Loss Surgery.
  1. How many requests did you receive for weight loss surgery in each of the last three financial years 2007/8, 2008/9 and from April 2009 to date?

    Requests received per year are as follows:

    2007/2008 270
    2008/2009 273
    2009/2010 698


    These figures relate to the number of attendances in various out patient clinics which may deal with weight loss surgery. The number of attendances and procedures will vary year-to-year as we offer a shared service with St George's Healthcare NHS Trust.

     
  2. How many of these requests were approved in each of these years?

    Requests approved per year are the number of operations which have taken place (and therefore comply with the criteria set by the PCT).

    2007/2008 39
    2008/2009 94

  3. What was the cost of the approved requests for weight loss surgery during each of these years?

    The cost per year is as follows:

    2007/2008 £198K Total for Gastric Band invoices raised
    2008/2009 £566K Total for Gastric Band invoices raised
    2009/2010 £325K Total for Gastric Band invoices raised for April to January


     
  4. What were the reasons you gave for refusing weight loss surgery during each of these years – please list?

    The Trust consultant receiving the referral decides if the patient meets the criteria for surgery in line with the PCT (Primary Care Trust) criteria under a pilot study which is currently being reviewed. Patients are refused weight loss surgery if they have not met the PCT criteria for NHS funding (a decision made by the PCT), or if they are not clinically or psychologically suitable for surgery.

     
  5. What were the reasons you gave for approving weight loss surgery during each of these years – please list?

    Patients who meet the criteria as set by the PCT and are clinically and psychologically suitable for surgery.

     
  6. Please provide a breakdown of the ages of those who requested weight loss surgery – eg 10-20yrs; 20-30yrs; 30-40yrs; 40-50yrs in each of these years.
