Details of the Request
In your financial accounts for the financial year 08/09 did you have a section for "losses & special payments" which is normally for bills you have issued and had to abandon or for items purchased which failed to work/arrive which you were unable to claim back?
If so, how much money was accounted for in the 08/09 financial year as being "losses and special payments"?
Please detail the three largest single amounts within this total giving a cost for each one and a brief description of the claim and the reason for the loss. |

Details of the Response
Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding losses & special payments.
The Trust’s Deputy Director of Finance has responded.
Yes we did record such losses and special payments.
The accounts for 2008/09 showed £121k (374 cases) for losses and special payments, with the three largest being:
- £10,460 re vandalisation of car parking machines;
- £10,000 paid to the NHS Litigation Authority as an ex gratia payment (employers liability) for a personal injury claim;
- £4,949 bad debt written off by the Trust's audit committee in relation to a salary overpayment, which occurred because of a delay in payroll receiving the leavers form. The debt was chased by letter but these were returned as 'addressee gone away'.
