Details of the Request
How many newborn babies’ blood spots are currently being stored in the Trust?
Is there a time limit on storage of the blood spots and if so, what is it?
Is there a publicly available policy on storage, use and access?
If so, please can you supply me with a copy?
Who is responsible for the blood spot cards (Guthrie cards) as data controller under the Data Protection Act?
Please can you supply a list of research projects that have been authorised to use the blood spots over the last 5 years. |

Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding the storage of newborn babies’ bloodspots (Guthrie cards).
The Trust’s Associate Director Maternity Services has responded:
Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust does not store blood spots. All our blood spots are sent to the laboratory at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.
