  • A copy of the Trust's corporate management structure.
  • Contact details for the head of IT/ICT at your Trust.
  • A copy of the organisational structure of the IT/ICT department.
  • Expenditure on IT/ICT on non-staff costs by major cost centres (hardware, software) for 2009/10.
  • Does the Trust have any virtualization technology provided by the local IT/ICT department?
  • Was the virtualisation implemented as a planned change, if so please supply the business case, project plan, other high-level project documents and any end of project reports or evaluation?
  • How many virtual servers does the IT/ICT department provide to the Trust, as of June 2010?
  • How many physical servers are utilised by the Trust, excluding any hosting solely virtual servers, as of June 2010?

Details of the Response

Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding ICT/IT.


The Trust’s Associate Director of Health Informatics (Interim) has responded.
  1. A copy of the ICT Strategy that covers the year 2009/10, if no such strategy exists please include a copy of your Trust’s strategy.

    This is currently under development, to be published Oct 2010, but a full range of Trust strategies, including an IM&T Strategic Review (Jan 2010), are freely available for reading through the Trust's public Internet.

    Yes
     
  7. Was the virtualisation implemented as a planned change, if so please supply the business case, project plan, other high-level project documents and any end of project reports or evaluation?

    This was implemented as a pilot, so no business case or project documents exist.
     
  8. How many virtual servers does the IT/ICT department provide to the Trust, as of June 2010? Please give a breakdown by technology and platform (VMWare, Hypervisor, etc)

    2 VMware ESX 3.5 hosts running 19 virtual servers.
     
  9. How many physical servers are utilised by the Trust, excluding any hosting solely virtual servers, as of June 2010?

    Approximately 100.
     
  10. Costs associated with the virtual environment for the year 2009/10, capital and revenue? Please provide a list of contracts and costs associated with support of the virtual platform(s) in the year 2009/10

    Virtual environment support is part of a contract that covers a number of key infrastructure elements, including Microsoft AD, Exchange and Citrix. The total annual cost for this is approximately £14k. There are also costs for the licence maintenance and associated hardware maintenance. This comes to around £4K.
     
  11. What ratio of IT/ICT services are provided on the virtual platforms as of June 2010?

    About 15%.
     
  12. The number of staff and their job titles who are authorised to administer the virtual platform as of June 2010?

    5 members of the technical Operations team. The two site Network and Systems managers and three of the IT Analysts.
     
  13. If no virtual technologies are supplied by the IT/ICT department, what date does the Trust’s IT/ICT department expect to implement such technology, if any?
