Details of the Request
I am trying to find out what the Trust's policy would be with regard to an acute attack of optic neuritis.
Would this be treated with steroids and would these be given orally or intravenously?
Would it be possible for you to supply me with the name and contact details of the neurologist who would be responsible for this?
My partner is trying to gather information before the event so that we know what to do. |

Details of the Response
Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding Optic Neuritis.
The Trust’s Medical Director has responded as follows:
The information from our neurologist suggests that there is no formal protocol for the treatment of optic neuritis with steroids.
The evidence in the literature suggests that although it affects (improves) the rate of clinical improvement it does not affect the actual degree of improvement that is achieved.
In cases, which would be decided by the clinicians involved, where steroids would be used this would be administered intravenously.
