The hospital multi-faith centres are located opposite Arnold Ward (Ashford) and adjacent to the A&E department (St. Peter’s). The centres are available for our more mobile patients and for visitors. We try to meet the spiritual needs of all religions and denominations.
The hospital has chaplains who visit the wards on a regular basis and also by request. They can also contact representatives of the Hindu, Islamic, Sikh, Jewish and other faiths if required.
Please ask the nurse in charge to contact the chaplain on your behalf if you would like to receive a visit or take Holy Communion on your ward, or if you have any other queries relating to the chaplaincy.
Sister Mellitus
I would just like to extend my own condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sister Mellitus who died after a short and unexpected illness.
Sister Mellitus was known to a great many of us and had a long-standing connection with both Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, first as a volunteer Lay Roman Catholic Chaplain at Ashford Hospital and then as Locum Ecumenical Chaplain and Roman Catholic Chaplain at St. Peter’s. Her own professional background was in nursing, finishing her career as Matron at the St John and St Elizabeth Roman Catholic Hospital in North London. Subsequently Sister Mellitus became one of the first Roman Catholic lay women to be appointed by her Bishop to the charge of a Parish and she then spent 10 years caring for the Parish of St. David’s in Stanwell before finally taking a greater role within our Chaplaincy Team.
I know that Sister Mellitus was admired and respected by many of our staff, patients and their families and she will be greatly missed by us all all, not least for her lively mind and wonderful sense of humour.
Andrew Liles,
Chief Executive
