The Medical Examiners Office is part of a national program, established by the Department of Health and Social Care. This program aims to review all patient deaths to ensure good quality patient care, supportive communication with relatives and accurate documentation of the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).

Each acute hospital trust in England has a medical examiners office. Medical examiners are senior doctors, such as consultants or senior GPs, who are trained and certified by the Royal College of Pathologists. They perform this role on a sessional basis in addition to their usual clinical work, which ranges across the medical and surgical sub-specialties.

The Medical Examiners Office, although located within St. Peter’s Hospital, is independent and impartial in its work reviewing patient deaths.

Now that St. Peter’s Medical Examiners Office is established, it is looking to roll out its service to the local community. There are projects underway to review deaths in our partner Hospices and our local GP surgeries. The aim nationally is that every death, which is not referred to the Coroner, should receive a Medical Examiner case review.
