Introducing the Rowley Bristow Unit |

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Business Unit is part of the Surgical Business Centre, the unit is lead by one of the Orthopaedic Consultants who is known as the Clinical Director, currently Mr. Christopher Schofield.
The unit offers a comprehensive range of services for patients with bone and soft tissues conditions, providing joint replacements, including revisions, hip, knee, shoulder, foot, ankle and spinal surgery.
The unit also cover acute trauma for the North East Surrey area and a regional specialist in application of Ilizarov frames for trauma and bone non- unions.
The unit also has a visiting consultant from St. George’s for orthopaedic services for children (paediatric).

The Unit works on both sites, Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals, offering a dedicated ring fenced MRSA free environment on Dickens Ward at Ashford where planned elective surgery takes place. At St. Peters there is the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Unit, which has its own dedicated services; orthopaedic outpatient clinics, pre-admission clinics, fracture clinics ,x-ray, plaster room, and admission office. St. Peters in-patients are mainly trauma patients but also admit elective patients who have complex medical needs, these are nursed on 2 dedicated wards; Rowley Bristow Ward East and West.
The team consists of 14 orthopaedic consultants, 6 registrars, 2 Staff grades, 2Clinical Fellows, 2 Associate Specialists, 1 Trauma Fellow and 14 junior doctors, supported by Business Unit Service Manager, Matron, Trauma Nurse Practitioner, Fracture Neck of Femur Nurse, 2 physiotherapist Clinical Specialists, Nurse led Pre-admission team and a Care of the Elderly Consultant. Within the ward environment, the ward manager has a team of trained and untrained nurses, with Physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants, Occupational therapists and a discharge co-ordinator. Consultants do regular ward rounds and a Multidisciplinary meeting is held weekly on each ward.

There are a number of other specialist nurses who provide support to patients, relatives and the ward teams they include:
- Acute Pain Team
- Chronic pain Team
- Diabetes Specialist Nurse
- Senior Specialist Nurse in Wound Management
- Rheumatology Specialist Nurse
- Palliative Care Team
- Parkinson Disease Specialist Nurse
The Trust is committed to the development of all staff and the unit has its own Clinical Practice Educator who works closely with the Matron to facilitate the training and development programme. All new staff are required to attend Trust Induction, plus individualize local induction. The unit accepts student nurses from the faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey. There are also close links with the post-graduate centre and voluntary services who allocate places for work-experience students and volunteers,
