Space for two in new neonatal unit cots (February 2012)

Funds raised for the neonatal intensive care unit at St Peter’s Hospital have been used to buy a Kanmed Twin Babywarmer cot, which enables two babies to sleep side-by-side and keeps them warm via a special temperature controlled water mattress. Pictured here, identical twins Rocco and Reo have been in the unit for over seven weeks and spent two of those in the shared cot.

Jaymie Andrew, Mum to the boys, said: “The boys were born on 5th January and when they first came into the unit they were too small and sick to be able to share a cot so went into separate incubators. I tried double cuddles with both boys but they didn’t really interact with each other like they do now. When they first went into the joint cot they tended to stay on separate sides and face away from each other – like they were wondering who the other was invading their space! But they gradually moved closer and closer together and now cuddle up together when they are sleeping and often face each other. After a tough few weeks it melts my heart to see them like that.” ... read more

Location	The children unit is located on the third floor of the outpatient/departmental block at St. Peter’s. The children wards (Ash and Oak ward) are on the third floor of the Duchess of Kent wing (SPH). The NICU unit is on the third level of Abbey Wing at St. Peter’s.
