For the third time in as many years the Mills family of Addlestone have made a £2,000 plus donation to the Early Births Fund (EFB) of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust.

Baby Ben Mills was born five week prematurely in October 2005, weighing 5lbs. 3oz. and spent the first six days of his life in NICU and four days in the transitional care ward before being allowed home with mum and dad, Paul and Diana. He was their first child. Their daughter, Lucy, was born in August 2008 and she spent three days in transitional care.
Following Ben’s birth Paul and Diana of Monks Crescent, Addlestone, began their fundraising. Each year he has organised a sponsored Golf Day at Hoebridge Golf Course, Old Woking. The first two events raised £2,204.80 and £2,166.95 and on Tuesday (20-01-09) the family presented £2,666.60 raised at the last event to Matron for Neonatal Intensive Care Audrey Elmore.
Said Audrey: “It’s wonderful to see Paul and Diana coming back year after year and we do appreciate their continuing support. It’s lovely, too, to see Ben and his baby sister and to know that they are all doing so well.”
The donation will go into the unit’s Early Births Fund which not only buys equipment for NICU but also pays for staff to go on specialist training courses.
Ben Mills was five weeks premature when he first made an entrance at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey. Now he’s a happy and healthy three year-old and Ben and his family, from Addlestone, returned to the unit to make a third donation in appreciation of the care he received.
The golf days are always held on the last Friday in August and include an auction and a raffle. Among the very many people and businesses that supported the event with gifts of prizes were the Egham branch of Magnets; New Haw hairdresser YKLSI; Proctor & Gamble of Egham; the Swan Hotel, Staines and the Tiger Timber Company of Chertsey who regularly donate a filled tool box.
Said Paul: “We would like to thank everyone involved. So many people give generously, take part and bid at the auction or buy raffle tickets. There are too many to name but we do appreciate their help in raising funds for this very special unit. Now we are looking forward to the next event on Friday 28 August!”
Paul, with his own dad, works for the firm founded by his grandfather B.C.E. Mills Bros, Building Maintenance, of Mead Lane, Chertsey.
