Staff at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals amongst most motivated in country

The latest NHS staff survey results, published last week by the Care Quality Commission, show that staff working at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust are amongst the most motivated 20% in the country.

The results showed improvements against 30% (12 out of 40) of the key findings and no significant deterioration in staff experience of the remaining 70%.

The Trust also scored in the best 20% of all acute Trusts in witnessing the lowest levels of potentially harmful errors, near misses or incidents, and experiencing harassment from patients and relatives in the last 12 months.

Overall, staff at the two hospitals are reporting good communication between senior management and staff (higher than average levels), and higher than average numbers of staff who would recommend the Trust as a good place to work and to receive treatment as a patient. Trust Chief Executive, Andrew Liles commented: “These results tell us a lot about how we are doing as an organisation. One of our key objectives is to be recognised as a top place to work and this kind of feedback is telling us that we are well on the way to achieving that aim. Of course there are improvements to make, and some of the results from the survey are less pleasing, but to know that the vast majority of staff responding to the survey feel motivated and would recommend our two hospitals is extremely encouraging. We know that well motivated staff also means better patient care, so local people should be encouraged that at their hospitals staff want to come to work and do their jobs well.

We also had one of the highest response rates to the survey from an acute hospital – 64% of those sampled – which is another indicator of a good level of staff engagement. We have put a lot of effort into improving communication and working with staff so they feel they are making a positive contribution to the way the hospital trust is run, which is borne out by these results.”

The Trust’s results also showed staff felt well supported by their immediate managers, have good levels of job satisfaction, are satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they are able to deliver, and that 88% of respondents felt the Trust provides good equal opportunities for career progression and promotion.

Last year we worked with staff to develop a set of values for the organisation that will underpin both the work we do and the way we behave. We are working with staff now to turn these into everyday behaviours that will support a really positive working culture here. These I hope will become our building blocks for the future and will really help turn Ashford and St Peter’s into a first-class hospital trust.”

The Trust values are:
  • Putting patients first
  • Taking personal responsibility
  • Having a passion for excellence
  • Having pride in our team

A series of workshops is planned to take place next month to involve staff and patients in defining behaviours to underpin our values as a key part of our journey to continue improving people’s experience at Ashford and St Peter’s. A further survey will be undertaken in June prior to the next national survey in September.
