Joel Romero Gonzalez is a Trainee Nurse Associate who joined the NHS during the pandemic.
Joel said: “After dedicating several years to the travel industry, my journey took an unexpected turn during the pandemic. While on furlough from my role as a Hotel Duty Manager at a luxurious hotel, I seized the opportunity to contribute to the NHS as a Patient Companion during such a critical time. It was a transformative experience that gave me a profound sense of purpose. Returning to the hotel industry felt incongruent when the lockdown finished, prompting my decision to resign and pursue a career as a Health Care Assistant.
“With the unwavering support of my Matron, Managers, and nursing team, I completed the necessary training and applied for an apprenticeship as a Trainee Nurse Associate. This path allowed me to fulfil my dream of studying at university while carrying on earning and providing for my family.
“While the decision to change careers is deeply personal, I do not doubt encouraging anyone considering an NHS apprenticeship because it offers a combination of practical experience, educational development, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on people's lives. So go for it!”
