The winners with their certificates

Dr Asim Nayeem, A&E Consultant at Ashford and St Peters Hospital presented Year 8 and 9 students from Chertsey-based Sir William Perkins School with prizes and certificates last week after they were crowned Kent, Surrey & Sussex regional winners in the 2017 Health Education England organised ‘Step into the NHS’ competition.

The competition required entrants to select a career in the NHS and complete a job description and an advertisement for their prospective chosen career. The KSS winners opted for an A&E doctor and made a short film about the important role a doctor plays in the NHS.

Step into the NHS is designed for year 8 and year 9 students in schools across England, to encourage them to think about the career opportunities in the NHS, develop job seeking skills and help them make informed decisions about GCSE and diploma options.

Speaking at the presentation Dr Asim said: “I’m really happy to be here and very impressed by this fantastic film you’ve made. You should all be very, very proud.

He added: “I’m very lucky because I have an amazing job which I absolutely love. I get to work with a brilliant team at St Peter’s Hospital, help people get better and get paid for doing it. For me it doesn’t get much better than that, it’s the best job in the world. I hope some, if not all of you consider a career in the NHS in the future.”

Sian Sallis, Pre-employment Co-ordinator, Health Education England working across Kent, Surrey & Sussex said: “We were particularly impressed with the amount of information the students included in the video, and the research they had undertaken about the role of an A&E doctor.”
