Inside the unit

From 1st October, there was a change in the organisation providing sexual health and HIV services that were provided from the Blanche Heriot Unit. The new provider is Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL). CNWL are an experienced Trust already providing a range of HIV and sexual health services across London and Surrey and we have been working closely with them to ensure a smooth transfer for patients.

HIV services

HIV services are now based at Buryfields Clinic in Guildford, with a smaller service at Earnsdale Clinic (Redhill).

Many of our clinicians transferred to the new service so CNWL retain expertise and knowledge; we have contacted patients (where we have permission to do so) requesting consent to transfer medical records to the new service.

Additional information for existing HIV patients:

  • You should have received a letter from us explaining the changes to the service, or will have received a telephone message asking you to contact the Clinic. If you haven’t been contacted please phone 01932 722664.
  • You will be asked to give us permission to transfer your care to CNWL so that they will have a copy of your summary care records when you next contact them. If you don’t agree to transfer your care then you can request a copy of your summary care records to share with a provider of your own choice by emailing us at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • CNWL will be running a transition clinic on Friday afternoons from the main outpatient department in Area 5 at St Peter’s Hospital. Your clinician will be able to give you more details or please see: https://www.sexualhealth.cnwl.nhs.uk/clinics/hiv-clinic-at-st-peters-hospital/
  • CNWL have a HIV information line: 020 3317 5100

In addition, to ensure a smooth transition, particularly for patients with more complex needs, we have agreed that CNWL will run a number of transition clinics from St Peter's Hospital for the first few months of the new service. Your clinician will be able to give you more details. If you have an appointment for a transition clinic at St Peter’s Hospital and need to change this then please contact the nursing team on 01932 722664.

More information is available on CNWL's patient information leaflets which you will find via their website at: www.sexualhealth.cnwl.nhs.uk.

Other services - genital dermatology and vulval pain

These services will remain at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals and will continue to be delivered from the Blanche Heriot Unit. We are currently in the process of setting up new clinics for these services and will be writing to patients with further details. If you are an existing patient and would like to arrange a new followup appointment then please contact the nursing team on 01932 722664. If you already have an appointment booked for a future date we will be writing to you to confirm this.

Why is this happening?

Surrey County Council's Public Health team are responsible for commissioning (buying) sexual health services for the local population, and similarly NHS England are responsible for HIV services.

Last year Public Health and NHS England decided to commission a new sexual health and HIV service to cover the whole of Surrey so people across the county had access to the same service. Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust - who are an experienced NHS organisation providing these types of service - won the contract and, because they are providing services for people across Surrey, want to concentrate services into specialist hubs.
