Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals are celebrating Consultant Ophthalmologist, Mr Mohamed Rashad, who has been awarded Educator of the Year 2025 by the British Islamic Medical Association at the British Muslim Awards Ceremony, held in Birmingham in December 2025.
The British Islamic Medical Association launched the first national event celebrating the outstanding contributions of Muslim professionals across the UK’s health and care sectors.
The prestigious national award recognises Mr Rashad’s outstanding contribution to medical education, particularly his leadership and innovation in cataract surgery training within the Ophthalmology Department.
Mr Rashad has developed a structured, competency-based cataract surgery teaching curriculum that provides a clear and safe learning pathway for ophthalmology trainees. The programme supports trainees step-by-step, ensuring trainees build both technical excellence and clinical confidence.
In addition to his work within the trust, Mr Rashad has embraced digital education to extend learning opportunities beyond institutional boundaries. He has established a surgical teaching YouTube channel, delivering high-quality cataract surgery education that is freely accessible to learners in over 41 countries worldwide. The educational resources he provides have become a widely trusted resource for both undergraduate and postgraduate doctors.
Dr Mark Roland, Chief Medical Officer at ASPH said “This award recognises Mr Rashad’s outstanding commitment to high quality training and patient safety. His innovative approach to cataract surgery education is making a real difference for our trainees and patients, and we are incredibly proud to see his work recognised.”
