About the Medical Examiners Office

The Medical Examiners Office is part of a national program, established by the Department of Health and Social Care. This program aims to review all patient deaths to ensure good quality patient care, supportive communication with relatives and accurate documentation of the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).

Each acute hospital trust in England has a medical examiners office. Medical examiners are senior doctors, such as consultants or senior GPs, who are trained and certified by the Royal College of Pathologists. They perform this role on a sessional basis in addition to their usual clinical work, which ranges across the medical and surgical sub-specialties.

The Medical Examiners Office, although located within St. Peter’s Hospital, is independent and impartial in its work reviewing patient deaths.

GP Community roll out was implemented last June 2022 and we have now successfully onboarded all 38 North West Surrey GP practices along with East Elmbridge PCN. GPs currently refer to the MEO via the method of Choose & Book / eRS (electronic referral service) and we aim to provide a service that supports GPs and relatives through the processes of registering a death. We are also now working with CSH Surrey - Woking and Walton Community Hospitals as well as Runnymede Hospital (Circle Health Group) and Nuffield Health Woking Hospital. The aim nationally is that every death, which is not referred to the Coroner, should receive a Medical Examiner case review.
