Infection Prevention and Control |
This was an excellent and very informative presentation by Ann Birler, Nurse Consultant / Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control. Ann covered issues in both hospital and home environments; and looked at ways in which each and every one of us can play a part in infection prevention and control ... read more |

Annual Members Meeting |
Our Annual Members Meeting was held on Tuesday 18th July and contained a packed programme of lively talks about the work of the Trust in the year. A presentation from the event is available here. |
Members’ Event on Research and Development |
A singular pleasure for members and governors of ASPH is attending Trust Members’ events. As an academic researcher interested in NHS organisation research, I was particularly fascinated to join fellow governors and members at an event, led by Dr Martha Wrigley (ASPH’s R&D Manager) in February, that showcased the research activity at the hospital. |
Diet and Nutrition Talk |
Trust Members enjoyed an excellent afternoon in early September with a set of talks covering the popular subject of Diet and Nutrition. The talks were given by members of the Dietetics team at Ashford and St Peter’s, which comprises 25 dietitians led by Liz Hedges. Liz started the presentations with a talk on 'Introducing Dietetics' and she also summed up at the end. Three of her colleagues, Vanessa Ridland, Julie Fleming and Laura Clancy, respectively talked about 'Nutrition in the News', 'Sugar and Fats - Good or Bad?' and 'Dementia Prevention through Diet'. |
As they were coming to a Members’ Meeting to hear about Infection Prevention and Control it is hoped that the 50 or so in the audience had not walked past any available sanitisers without using them. Judging by one of the questions asked, and the murmurings of agreement, it would seem that the Trust’s members considered this a high priority action when entering and leaving a hospital building. They were appalled at seeing how many just walked past. |

There will be blood 2 |
No, you haven’t overlooked a sequel to the 2008 epic film, but in case you missed the second Members’ Event focussing on Cardiovascular Services in July 2015 here is a flavour of what happened. The blood, as in the first event, was only in pictures on the screen in order to demonstrate some of the complex surgery performed to the audience of around 100 which packed out the Lecture Theatre in the Education Centre at St Peter’s Hospital. |
David Sills, Dementia and Admiral Nurse Lead and Layla Hibbs, a Dementia Occupational Therapist, gave a thoughtprovoking presentation about Dementia at a very well-attended Members’ Health Event. |
|
Cancer Services |
The Members’ event held in early April gave us an opportunity to update members on the cancer services we provide at both Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals. Chairman, Aileen McLeish welcomed everyone to the event. Sarah Burton, Lead Cancer Clinician and Lead Nurse Cancer and Palliative Care gave an overview of the cancer services at Ashford and St Peter’s. Cate Gray, Research Divisional Lead (Oncology and Surgery) talked about the research being carried out to help cancer patients, including the development of new drugs, medical devices, surgical procedures, clinical trials and other interventions. |
Along with many Members of the Trust, I attended the recent Members’ presentation by Rebecca Bushby on Venous Thromboembolism. Rebecca is a VTE Prevention Nurse Specialist at Ashford and St Peter’s and has recently had an article published on the “Safety and Efficacy of Enoxaparin for Thromboprophylaxis in Obese Patients” accepted by ‘Thrombus’, a highly respected publication, showing her considerable knowledge of the subject. |

Rowley Bristow Unit - Simply the Best |
Did you know that the Rowley Bristow unit has been judged to be not just one of the best, but the best orthopaedic unit in the country when it comes to treating hip fractures in the elderly? |
About 70 members attended a briefing session in the Lecture Theatre at St Peter’s on 18th June 2014 to receive a progress report on the proposed merger between this Trust and Royal Surrey. After an introduction by our Chairman, Aileen, Andrew gave a brief but persuasive presentation on the current situation and the compelling reasons for merger. Although both Trusts are currently performing well, both clinically and financially, the next few years will present challenges to both. These challenges are fourfold. An ageing population, advanced costly technology, even higher quality standards and reduced funding from Government. No change is not an option. Both Trusts will slip into deficit situations in the next four years with a consequent negative impact on clinical performance. |
|
I, together with over 70 other Trust Members, attended the Members’ Event held at Ashford Hospital on 25th March 2014 at which Mr Arun Gupta, Consultant Ophthalmologist, gave a presentation on Eye Treatments and Surgery. The presentation was both informative and enjoyable and was presented in such a manner that the complex subject matter was easily understood. |
|
No, the February Members’ Event was not the screening of the 2008 epic film of this title, but was a friendly warning from Trust Chief Executive, Andrew Liles, to the audience gathered for a presentation by five of our Trust’s Consultant Vascular Surgeons. The blood would only be in pictures on the screen, he hastened to add, in his introduction when he mentioned with great pride that the vascular service at Ashford & St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust had successful patient outcomes which were amongst the best in the whole country. Most hospitals are unable to make this provision and it is offered to a large part of Surrey (notably the catchment areas of the hospitals in Epsom, Guildford and Redhill) by a team of six Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons and four Interventional Radiologists. |

As Trust Chaplain I have for many years been part of a group co-ordinating care for patients in the final stages of life. Around ten years ago we realised it would be helpful to create a coordinated care pathway to ensure that every patient at the end of their life received consistently good care. It was while we were working on a local pathway that the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) was formulated and adopted nationally. We were very encouraged as the LCP encompassed everything we were trying to coordinate across our organisation. |

“How many of you know someone with dementia?” was a question asked of the large audience at the Members’ event in the Post Graduate Centre on 26th February. 75% put up their hands and were told that this percentage was likely to increase to nearly 100% in a few years. |
|
It's a strange notion isn't it, that in the midst of our greatest sadness we can bring hope to others however, this was very much the message of the March Members' Event, which was focussed on Organ and Tissue Donation. |

Common Nutritional Problems
|
|
Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals have been very successful in reducing infections such as Clostridium Difficile and MRSA over recent years, due to robust infection prevention and control measures. |
|
Cancer: “It’s not just about the disease — it’s about treating the person!”. |
|
I, together with over 60 other members of the Trust, were pleased to attend a presentation on Osteoporosis given by Dr Gulam Patel, Consultant Rheumatologist/Divisional Director, Specialist Medicine & Specialist Surgery; Liz Hedges, Head of Nutrition & Dietetics and Dr Vincent Prakash, Consultant Radiologist on Wednesday 4th July in the Lecture Theatre, Post Graduate Education Centre at St Peters Hospital. |
|
The members were treated to a comprehensive review of the hospitals’ Vascular Services at this event, which included presentations by two patients both of whom had been successfully treated for life-threatening conditions. |
|
One of the many advantages to being a member of Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the opportunity to attend member only lectures given by hospital staff on areas of their expertise. Guests can be accommodated but after hearing what is on offer they need little inducement to become members in their own right. The subjects are largely chosen by Trust members, reflecting their interests or concerns. |
