Healing Arts

Marcine Waterman and Andrea Lewis

Healing Arts, the arts programme for ASPH, is delighted to announce that it will be restarting its live music programme next month, as part of its ongoing work to improve patient experience and outcomes through the presence of art in all forms across the Trust!

Live music will return to ASPH through pilot programmes in inpatient areas and scheduled performances from volunteers, including staff, local schools and colleges, as well as community volunteers.

We believe and research shows that live music helps people feel relaxed and confident, and can relieve frustration, stress and isolation. A recent research study conducted by the University of Huddersfield and the University of Sussex in partnership with the charity Music in Hospitals showed that people who experience music, clinically, experience decreases in the level of anxiety, decreases in the level of stress the body experiences, an increase in their wellbeing.

To mark the return of live music, the Healing Arts which is funded by the ASPH Charity, has purchased a baby grand piano for the main entrance of St Peter’s Hospital, where a series of short weekly performances will take place. Starting at the end of November, talented members of Team ASPH, local schools and community volunteers will play short concerts for staff and patients to enjoy.

Marcine Waterman, Non-Executive Champion for Healing Arts has said ‘I am thrilled the Healing Arts is now able to commence its music participatory programme with the introduction of a piano in the St Peter’s Hospital entrance. The sound of music can calm the soul and lift the spirit. What a great way to enter a hospital. We are really making progress in turning our estate into a healing arts space. I am really looking forward to our lunchtime concerts featuring staff and our community. Please come along to listen our piano in action and find out more about the Healing Arts Programme.’
