Patient Information

Introduction

This leaflet talks about the Emergency Departments Bring Back Clinic, that you have been offered.

This leaflet explains what the Bring Back Clinic is. It describes how the waiting times in the Emergency Department work, why the Bring Back Clinic has been set up, how the clinic works and common concerns that you may have.

The Bring Back Clinic

This is the clinic run by the Emergency Department. It is for patients who have minor injuries. The aim of this clinic is to shorten the waiting times and reduce the number of patients who wait overnight in the Emergency Department.

How the Emergency Department waiting times work

Due to the nature of the Emergency Department, waiting times will change greatly. Patients who attend the emergency department are seen in time order. If a patient’s condition is very serious; they will be seen as a priority.

If there are many people attending the Emergency Department, the waiting time will get longer.

How we manage the long waiting times

To manage waiting times and improve patient’s experience, minor injuries are being brought back to an appointment-based clinic - ‘The Bring Back Clinic (BBC)’.

How the Clinic works

If your injury is suitable, you will be given an appointment for the following day. During this appointment, your injury will be assessed and treated with the appropriate follow-up care arranged. Appointments are between 08:00-12:00 and are 15 mins in length.

Common Concerns

  • But 111 told me to come to the Emergency Department.

Don’t worry. The clinic is for injuries that meet the “Treatment within 12 hours” criteria set out by 111.

  • I am concerned that waiting that long will lead to lasting damage.

Your injury will be checked to ensure you are safe to come back the following day. If there is a concern about your injury, or a risk of it getting worse, you will not be redirected. We can supply you with the necessary equipment to protect your injury until your appointment. E.g., Sling, Splint, Crutches etc.

  • But I am in pain

We will give you pain medications to take home to help control your pain. Don’t worry, taking pain killers won’t affect your assessment. In fact, it will make it easier to find the problem at your appointment.

  • But I paid for my parking already

You will be given “One Shot” ticket which will allow a one-shot exit from the car park. This will be valid on the day of your appointment. You do not have to pay for parking twice.

  • I am not sure I want to go and come back

The idea of our Bring Back Clinic (BBC) is to reduce your waiting time with us. You will be given the appropriate advice and safety netting you require. If you have any further concerns prior to leaving, then we will endeavor to answer these.

Thank you, we hope you feel better soon.
