December 2025: Adding the Roof

The roof is on and is now ‘weather tight’ which means the roof will keep the inside dry for the rest of the internal works to be completed, without being affected by the weather. Concrete upstands are being installed to support the external walls, doors and windows into the courtyard at the rear of the building. Preparation works are also being carried out for the skylights to be fixed to the roof.
The builders will be taking a well-earned break over the Christmas and New Year period and will be return to work from 5 January 2026.
March 2026: Building the Walls

The building works are well underway. So far, we’ve seen the site being cleared, preparation work for the concrete base to be installed. Steelworks providing the frame and sturdy structure for the new building with the roof being added just before Christmas, making the building ‘weather tight’, which means the roof will keep the inside of the dry for the rest of the internal works to be completed, just in time before all the torrential rain.
Concrete stand ups were installed to support the external walls, doors and windows into the courtyard at the rear of the building to provide structural support and protect against water entering.
Essential fire-proofing has been completed. The frames for the skylights are now on the roof and the insulation has arrived and will be installed shortly. In addition to this there are preparation works taking place to build the floor.
The builders are progressing very quickly and are currently building the walls inside the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre. They’ve also taken the first steps in getting electricity and ventilation to the Centre installed. We should see more of these in the ceiling once the walls are finished ready for decorating.

April 2026: Preparing for the Mechanical Equipment
The builders have progressed with the internal walls, and each room is now visible. They are installing brackets and accessories in preparation for engineers to fit the mechanical equipment on the ceilings to provide the centre with ventilation and climate control.
Outside, the ground is now being prepared for the paving to be installed.

May 2026: Paint, Plaster, and Paving
The site is the busiest it's been in the programme so far and there have been significant progress. More parts of the ventilation system have been installed including the ductwork. The side rooms have been plastered with the first coats of paint being applied, with the plasterers moving on to the meeting room and the main area. The garden has its paving slabs laid down.

June 2026: Doors and Floors
A lot of progress was made in the Macmillan site since the last update and we are heading ever closer to moving-in day!
Most of the cladding has gone up in the external wall at the back of the building:

The ventilation and air-conditioning system has now been installed and is being tested and commissioned. The builders are now installing the ceilings.

The floor has been laid down. Protective sheets have been placed on top of it for the rest of the building work.

The sliding doors to the meeting room and the first of the glazed doors have arrived on site and are being fitted. The external openings are boarded up to protect the inside from the weather.

The built-in cupboards are now being installed:

July 2026: Ready for Inspection
The centre is now almost finished, with a couple of things and some finishing touches left to be installed by the contractors. We will then check the building for any snags while inspectors will check the building to make sure this meets building standards.
Once these are complete, we will start moving in with furniture and equipment. We are looking forward to seeing this with all the furniture inside.

July 2026: Finishing Touches
The building works are now complete and we are now beginning to move in, unpack furniture and set up our equipment. The walls have been decorated with lovely murals from a local artist, Michelle Sobihy, which provide a calming environment for the centre.
Our first group of volunteers have recently attended their induction and are getting ready for the centre to open.
