Staff in the theatres

Colleagues at Ashford Hospital had an incredibly productive weekend, treating 50 surgical patients and undertaking a range of procedures on Saturday 23 March. Teams utilised six theatres including Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI), Urology, and Ophthalmology.

This is a significant volume of procedures to undertake in one day but our highly skilled and experienced teams were able to complete all planned activity with the support of senior clinicians and there was a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Increasing surgical capacity and undertaking additional work at weekends is part of our longer term plan to reduce waiting times for patients across Surrey Heartlands and neighbouring regions, as we develop a dedicated surgical centre of excellence at Ashford. The new development includes the creation of two new ophthalmology theatres and two new main Laminar flow theatres and will provide increased capacity for elective orthopaedic procedures, including hip and knee replacement surgery and ophthalmology eye surgery.

Huge thanks to our teams who worked over the weekend and to all colleagues who helped to plan and make arrangements. Having such a successful and productive weekend puts us in a strong position as we prepare to open the new elective centre later this year.
