We’re delighted to announce that the Preterm Birth service at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Health Innovation KSS Patient Safety Collaborative have been shortlisted for the HSJ Awards in the Patient Safety Category, recognising an outstanding contribution to healthcare and securing a place at the prestigious awards ceremony later this year.

Over 1,350 entries were received for this year’s Awards, with 234 projects and individuals reaching the final shortlist. The high volume and exceptional quality of applications showcases the impressive levels of innovation and care continually being developed within the UK’s healthcare networks.

Ashford and St Peter’s established a specialist Preterm Birth (PTB) clinic in 2018, following a national target that was set to reduce preterm births from 8% to 6%. Since the service was set up, it has expanded to optimise preterm deliveries, improve outcomes and provide follow-up care, encouraging couples to return to our services for future pregnancies. Health Innovation KSS Patient Safety Collaborative has been a key partner in this and works with the team to ensure the innovative work is shared regionally and nationally to help reduce variation and support a standardised approach to care. The work carried out by the clinic has significantly helped to reduce the Trust’s PTB rate to one of the lowest in the country.

Dr Lilian Ugwumadu, Preterm Birth Lead Consultant at Ashford and St Peter’s, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the HSJ Awards 2024. This recognition is a testament to our Preterm Birth service and the dedication and hard work of our entire team in providing exceptional and safe care for women at risk of preterm birth, as well as the positive impact on patient outcomes. We are incredibly proud of this achievement, and it motivates us to keep improving our service and making a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients.

“Whatever the result on the night, we already feel like winners for getting this far and are so proud to have the opportunity to share our success with colleagues from across the entire sector, as well as showcasing everything we’ve learnt through implementing our project.”

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, adds; “It always gives me great pleasure to congratulate our finalists at this stage of the judging process and this year is no exception as we acknowledge Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals for being shortlisted in the category of Patient Safety.

“However, it’s always important to remember that the HSJ Awards are not just a celebration of success stories but also a platform to shape the future of the NHS.

“We can’t wait to welcome our finalists to the awards ceremony in November and to recognise and applaud such impressive achievements across the sector. Huge thanks also go to our headline partner, Vodafone Business, who share our mission of driving the standard of healthcare excellence and creating better patient experiences.”

The winners will be announced during the awards ceremony held at Evolution London on Thursday 21 November 2024. The full list of nominees for can be found at https://awards.hsj.co.uk/
