Members of the Orthopaedic Surgery Team

Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Orthopaedic Surgery Team is celebrating the completion of 200 total knee replacement surgeries, using a robotic assistance surgical system.

A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged parts of the knee with artificial parts. The surgical system offers surgeons enhanced precision and accuracy, using a special probe to map the patient's joint, generating a real-time 3D model of their anatomy. The system uses this 3D model to plan the optimal implant placement, leading to better outcomes for patients and faster recovery times.

The first surgery using the system was carried out at Ashford Hospital in October 2023 by Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Abdel Hassan. On reaching the 200-surgery milestone, Mr Hassan said: “This was a proud achievement for the whole team. We are grateful that we can offer this service to our patients which reduces the risk of infection or the need for repeat surgeries as well as offering a shorter recovery time.”

Other Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons responsible for reaching this milestone include Mr Ashwin Unnithan, Mr Amit Vats, Mr Josh Jacob and Mr Alasdair Cameron-Smith.

Dr Mark Roland, Chief Medical Officer, added: “This is a fantastic achievement for the Orthopaedic Team and the trust. Embracing technology like this system enhances the work of our surgeons and leads to better outcomes for our patients, meaning we can see people and get them back to their daily lives as soon as possible.”
