The Surrey Surgical Centre has officially opened at Ashford Hospital, marking a major milestone in the collaboration between Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, and the Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board. This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to providing additional orthopaedic surgery resources to meet the growing demand for elective procedures and improve patient care across Surrey.
The Surrey Surgical Centre offers patients the choice to receive their surgery at the centre or continue their treatment at their usual hospital. Strategically located within Ashford Hospital’s site, the centre’s design ensures it remains insulated from the typical disruptions faced by acute hospitals, particularly the strains caused by emergency treatment demands and seasonal surges in activity during colder months.
The centre features an expanded theatre complex with two new state-of-the-art laminar flow theatres, increasing surgical capacity for elective orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacement surgeries. This expansion is set to make a substantial impact on reducing the length of waiting lists and waiting times for local patients in need of surgery.
Louise Stead, Group Chief Executive at Ashford and St Peter’s and Royal Surrey Hospitals, said: “The Surrey Surgical Centre is a great example of partnership working between hospitals in Surrey Heartlands. By working together and working differently, we can better meet the orthopaedic healthcare needs of our community. This centre will play an important part in helping us to reduce waiting times for surgery, and we know how important this is for local people. We are committed to providing the best possible care for our communities, and The Surrey Surgical Centre is a practical example of how we are working together as an Integrated Care System to do this.”
The Surrey Surgical Centre will be instrumental in alleviating pressures on local health services and ensuring timely, high-quality care for those requiring orthopaedic treatment. Its opening signals a positive step towards improving the overall healthcare experience for patients in Surrey, supporting the region’s NHS trusts in providing the best care while reducing waiting times for essential surgeries.
