We are so grateful to former patient Ian Clark who is now volunteering with us to lead an arts and crafts club in the Bradley Unit. Ian is generously giving his time following his own stay and rehabilitation in the unit.
“In March 2022, my life changed overnight. I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the peripheral nerves. Within just a few days, I became paralysed from the neck down. I spent six weeks receiving acute treatment at Frimley Park Hospital before moving to the Bradley Unit, where I completed 12 weeks of intensive neurological rehabilitation. The progress I made there was incredible - through intensive therapy, and a lot of determination, I gradually regained strength and mobility. By the end of my rehabilitation, I was able to walk out of the Bradley Unit with the support of a walking stick."
“During my 12-week stay, I had time to reflect on how I might one day give something back to the unit that had played such an important role in my recovery. I’ve always loved crafting and have seen how creative activities can have a powerful impact during rehabilitation. So, when the team invited me to run craft sessions, I was absolutely delighted. It has given me a meaningful way to support others on their own recovery journey.” The Bradley Unit team are looking forward to the next session due to run in the summer.
