Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is celebrating the national recognition of CT2 surgeon Jeevitha Channappa, who was shortlisted for the prestigious Silver Scissors Award - one of the UK's highest honours in surgical education.
Run by the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT), the Silver Scissors Award recognises early-year surgical trainees who make an outstanding contribution to teaching, mentorship and supporting the development of future surgeons.
The national selection process recognises individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, professionalism, accessibility, commitment to trainee development, and the ability to create positive and inclusive learning environments and nominees are put forward by their fellow trainees.
Jeevitha was one of only five trainees shortlisted nationally, reflecting the significant impact she has had in supporting colleagues alongside her clinical responsibilities.

Dr Clarence Chikusu, Director of Medical Education at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, said: "Jeevitha's achievement is a wonderful recognition of the values we strive to promote across our organisation. Surgical training is about far more than developing technical skills, it is about creating an environment where colleagues feel supported, encouraged and inspired to reach their full potential.”
Jeevitha's nomination highlights the trust's commitment to developing future clinicians through supportive leadership, high-quality education and a culture where learning and excellent patient care go hand in hand.
Jeevitha said: "Being nominated for the Silver Scissors Award was both unexpected and incredibly humbling. It feels rewarding to know that I may have had a positive impact on my colleagues, and it encourages me to continue investing in teaching, mentorship and supporting others alongside my clinical work.
"I have been fortunate to have had incredible mentors throughout my journey, and I am simply trying to follow in their footsteps and emulate the support, guidance, and inspiration they have provided me. This nomination feels less like an individual achievement and more a reflection of the mentors and teams who have helped shape my journey. It is a reminder of how important supportive environments and good mentorship are, and it motivates me to continue giving back in the same way."
